Your Baby Growth and DevelopmentYour Baby Growth and Development

By pregnancy calendar week 16, your baby measures approximately 4.5 inches from crown to rump. He/she weighs about 5 ounces.

Your baby is growing both fingernails and toenails inside the womb. he limb movements are becoming more coordinated and vigorous. The head is erect and the legs are developed. Your baby is emptying his or her bladder every 40-45 minutes.

Soon, you should be able to feel your baby’s first kicks. However, quickening may not occur until as late as the twentieth week of your pregnancy. First-time mothers and/or overweight women often must wait slightly longer to feel their babies move.

Your Body during Pregnancy Calendar Week 16

During pregnancy calendar week 16, your uterus weighs approximately 8.5 ounces. In addition, your body has produced about 7.5 ounces of amniotic fluid to surround and protect your baby.

Your heart continues to increase the blood volume output to supply the baby with oxygen.

Your body is producing 50 percent more blood than normal, it can lead to excessive oil production. To minimize the appearance of shiny skin, use an oil-free cleanser to wash your face each morning. You may also wish to try blotting your face throughout the day with an absorbent facial tissue made from rice paper.

Many women experience round ligament pain throughout the second trimester of pregnancy, you can reduce your discomfort by changing positions as slowly as possible. Regular stretching exercises, a warm (not hot) bath or use of a heating pad may also provide relief.

Taking a quick stroll around the block helped to clear and refresh my head. Going outside and enjoying a change of scenery helped to energize me for the rest of the day.

Mild dehydration is actually a quite common (and often overlooked) cause of fatigue. So sipping a cold glass of water also helped me to feel less fatigued.

Be sure to drink about 8 glasses of water per day. Try squeezing some lemon or lime juice in your water for some extra flavoring or to make it more palatable.

Eat healthy as often as you could. Also, protein containing snacks combined with carbs, such as cheese or peanut butter and crackers, or a handful of nuts helped to keep you energized as well.

It’s not easy working a full time job throughout your pregnancy. You may be at work out of choice, or out of necessity, but either way you need to take some extra precautions in taking care of yourself during the coming months.

It is very important to keep your stress level as low as possible during this time, and that’s not always easy. You will find yourself prioritizing your activities, and filtering out unnecessary tasks.

Don’t be afraid to ask for extra help around the house, with pet chores (don’t touch that litter box!), laundry, cooking, dishes, etc.

Exercise is also very important, especially if you work in front of a computer all day. If you are able to join a family court club, they have many activities to choose from for the whole family.

It can be hard to find good maternity work clothes. Look for local consignment stores and on Ebay.com. You will find a lot of great deals there and not have to pay “new” prices. Buy several pairs of neutral pants that will go with any top, and that will help save on your wardrobe.
If someone is to fill in for you while you’re away from the office, plan ahead and make sure someone knows what you do every day.

Don’t be afraid to get up and walk around when you need a break or to kick your shoes off under your desk when no one’s looking. Hopefully your employer is watching out for you and wants to help you through a successful pregnancy.

In actuality, your baby begins wiggling and moving by the 8th or 9th week of pregnancy. However, he is too small for you to feel at this point. However as he gets bigger he starts to kick the walls of your uterus as he moves around. This can happen as early as the 14th week of pregnancy, normally for women in their second pregnancy or beyond, and as late as the 26th week of pregnancy for women who are in their first pregnancy or might be a little overweight.

Quickening is often explained away as gas bubbles, especially by first time moms who aren’t sure what it should feel like. Quickening may also feel like a woman has butterflies in her stomach, flying around, or someone inside, tapping on their uterus. Eventually however the kicks, punches, and elbows will become obvious to even first time moms-to-be, and the movements will start to come with more regularity than they have in the past.
Remember that once you feel the quickening, you will probably be able to feel it everyday, however some days it may not be as often or as strong as others. If you want to get your baby active, it is often suggested that you drink a big glass of orange juice and lay down to wait for your baby to move. When you are up moving around, it often rocks your baby to sleep, so when you stop moving, he is able to wake up and start moving on his own.
If you start to feel what you think is quickening, but has a definite pattern, like a tap every five to ten seconds, it could be that your baby has the hiccups! Hiccups, like the quickening are a sure sign that your baby is growing and is healthy inside your belly.
