Pregnancy Calendar Week 26
Your Baby Growth and Development
By pregnancy calendar week 26, your baby weighs nearly two pounds, approximately 13 inches long. Your baby is becoming stronger each day. His fingernails, toenails, eyebrows and eyelashes are now fully present and will continue to grow until birth. He can respond to sound and can hear you and those around you. Veins are visible through your baby’s skin, although it is quickly changing from transparent to opaque.
The air sacs in the lungs begin to develop. Brainwave activity has begun for the auditory and visual systems. This is also the time where your little super star’s head hair is starting to grow!

you will often find yourself with aches and pains from the pressure. These include back pain, pelvic pain and even pain in your sides or ribs. The best thing to do when this happens is to change your position or move around for a little while.

What is the Linea Negra-the dark line on your belly?
The linea negra is a dark line that forms down the middle of some women’s bellies as their pregnancy progresses, normally about a centimeter in width, and can run from the pubic bone to the bottom of the rib cage in some women.
Linea negra is caused by an increased production of the pigment melanin during pregnancy, so it is more commonly found in women who already have darker skin pigmentation. Prior to a dark line, some women might see a lighter, white line called “linea alba”.
Linea negra normally starts appearing during the second trimester, and may last for several months after your baby is born. While for some women the line will never completely go away.
Linea negra has a myth associated with it as well. It is an oldwives’ tale that if the linea negra stops at the belly button, the woman is having a girl, and if it goes all the way to the bottom of the rib cage then the woman is having a boy.
It is no danger to mom or baby from the linea negra. There are a few things you can do to help reduce the color and site of the line.
• Stay out of the sun
• Increase your intake of folic acid
• Try using makeup to cover up the line
What things to do at the last minutes?
Almost all of the supplies and furniture you need for your baby should be prepared by the last month of pregnancy. But don’t forget the other things you’ll need for going and coming home from the hospital!
Hospital Bag for You
Things you might want to include in your bag are:
• Pajamas/lounging outfit for after the baby is born, if you don’t want to be stuck in the hospital gown
• Clothes to go home in
• Camera/video camera to record the birth and get your first pictures of baby
• Music for during and after labor
• Snacks for during labor for you and your labor partner
• Maxi-pads to go home in (the hospital will supply what you need while there)
• Any medicine you are on, including your prenatal vitamins
• Birth Plan
• List of numbers of who to call after the baby comes
• Phone cards to call family and friends long distance if cell phones are not allowed in your room
Hospital Bag for Baby
Some things you may want to include are:
• Gowns for baby while in hospital
• Going home outfit
• Special baby blanket
• Cloth diapers if you choose
• Diaper rash cream
• Diapers/Wipes (hospital will supply some but it is always good to have extras!)
• Scratch mitts for babies hands
Other Things Last Minute to Do
If it is possible, get as much sleep as you can in the last weeks before your baby arrives. Chances are you won’t get much sleep after your baby is in your arms.
Try to get away for a quiet weekend just you and your partner before the baby comes. This last chance for quiet time and bonding will be appreciated in the months after your baby arrives and you find that you have very little time alone, or with each other.
Get a facial, get your nails done, or other things that help you relax and are just for you. Once your baby arrives it will be difficult to find time to pamper yourself, so be sure to pamper yourself while you still can. It is important that you try to relax and enjoy the last minutes of your pregnancy and your baby’s movements before you enter a whole new phase of your life.
What Do I should prepare for Breastfeeding My Baby?
Breast milk is free, convenient, and contains antibodies that boost your baby’s natural immune system. Nursing mothers also report than they lose pregnancy-related weight gain quicker than bottle-feeding moms.
If you decide to breastfeed, purchase a few good nursing bras and some easy-to-open blouses. If you’re planning to go back to work or be away from home for more than a few hours at a time, a breast pump and one or two bottles should also be purchased. As difficult as this may be, you should try not to offer your baby artificial nipples (including a pacifer) until 4-6 weeks after birth to ensure the success of breastfeeding.
Breast milk is the most nutritious food for a newborn, but there are still many reasons that women decide to use formula. For example, bottle feeding is often necessary when the mother has a chronic health condition or uses medication that could be absorbed into her breast milk. BTW, bottle feeding allows the baby’s father, older siblings, and other caregivers to take a more active role in his/her development.
If you’re planning to formula feed your baby, you’ll need to purchase at least six bottles, plus equipment for cleaning and sterilization. Although it’s not necessary, many women find a bottle warmer to be helpful. However, you may want to refrain from stocking up on formula until after your baby is born. Many newborns have problems digesting certain brands of formula.
